Precursors and narcotics

Precursors are substances applied in the production, manufacture of narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances.

Precursors and narcotics, as well as tools or equipment, the further use of which is deemed inappropriate, are subject to destruction in accordance with the Law of Ukraine “On Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances, Their Analogues and Precursors”.

Fluorescent lamps

Despite their energy efficiency, fluorescent lamps contain mercury vapor, which poses a threat to health and the environment. One broken lamp can poison up to 50 m³ of air.

According to the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 1102, these lamps are classified as hazardous waste and require special handling.

Batteries and accumulators

Batteries and accumulators are hazardous waste that are widely used for household, industrial, technical and technological purposes and are subject to disposal in accordance with the Law of Ukraine “On Waste Management”. They contain toxic chemical elements: cadmium, mercury, lead, sulfuric acid, as well as a dangerous electrolyte (a solution of dangerous acids and alkalis). Such a composition inside one AA battery pollutes 20 kg of soil or 400 liters of water, accumulates and poisons nature for years.


The only way to protect the environment and human health from the battery waste harmfulness is to dispose of it. In the course of recycling, the electrolyte is neutralized, the batteries undergo chemical, physical and thermal treatment, after which the main part of the used battery is reused.

Oil-containing waste

The bulk of waste of oil-containing substances is generated in the chemical, electrochemical, light, metallurgical, transport industries, mechanical engineering, as well as wherever fuel containing material and various oil refining products are used. Waste oil products are classified as hazardous, therefore they are approved for specialized management (disposal) by the Law of Ukraine “On Waste Management”.

Varnishes, paints, adhesives, plasticizers

The harm of paints and varnishes, adhesives and similar products is already expressed at the stage of product use. However, for many consumers (individuals, companies and industrialists) the fact remains in the shadows that after the use of such materials, hazardous toxic waste is generated, which is dangerous for nature and human health for a long time due to long decomposition periods. According to the Law of Ukraine “On withdrawal from circulation, processing, disposal or further use of low-quality and hazardous products”, the Law of Ukraine “On Waste Management”, the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated 13/07/2000 No. 1120 “On Approval of the Regulations on Control of Transportation of Hazardous Waste and Their Utilization and the Yellow and Green Lists of Waste”, paint and varnish waste is subject to special disposal at high temperatures using professional equipment.

Pharmaceutical waste

According to the definition of WHO, pharmaceutical waste includes medicines that do not meet quality requirements or medical standards. These are expired, unused, spilled or contaminated pharmaceuticals and preparations in solid or liquid form, as well as narcotic drugs and unused vaccines. 

Major sources of pharmaceutical waste include pharmaceutical manufacturers, healthcare institutions, outpatient clinics, morgues, departments of morbid anatomy, medical laboratories, research institutes, preclinical and clinical research facilities, veterinary hospitals, blood transfusion centers, emergency and urgent medical services. Small sources of pharmaceutical waste include pharmacies, veterinary pharmacies, pharmaceutical distributors, sanatoriums, shelters for the elderly and disabled, cosmetic and dental offices, tattoo and acupuncture specialists.

Biological waste

Biological waste is the remains of tissues and organs generated in the course of medical activities, as well as the death of various species of animals, birds, and processing of materials of animal origin.

Biological waste poses a serious threat and must be disposed on a compulsory basis. Some types of biological waste can be infected with dangerous viruses, for example, anthrax and SARS. In other words, the pathologies that are potentially dangerous to humans. It is precisely because of the negligent attitude to the destruction of this type of waste that epidemics of deadly diseases periodically arise in the world.

Containers for pesticides and agrochemicals

Chemical plant protection agents, such as pesticides and agrochemicals, are seasonal products and their packaging shall guarantee the preservation of product quality even during long-term storage. Therefore, pesticides and agrochemicals are packaged in special containers made of polymer materials. After losing their consumer properties, they must be disposed of. Its use for storing water, food, animal feed and other household needs is strictly prohibited.

Since plastic itself is almost “eternal” material that does not decompose over time, and its burning can harm humans and the environment; the disposal of such containers should be carried out not by business entities themselves, but by a specialized enterprise.
