Waste as a Source of Energy: A New Step Toward Energy and Environmental Resilience in Ukraine

09/03/2026

Over the past few years, energy security has become one of the most critical challenges for Ukraine. Damage to energy infrastructure has accelerated the need for new technological solutions capable of strengthening the resilience of the national power system.

One of the approaches widely used in Europe is Energy-from-Waste (EfW) — technologies that allow waste to be safely processed while generating energy.

Following this global trend, UkrekoProm is investing in the installation of a modern steam boiler for thermal waste treatment, which in the future will enable the generation of electricity.

European Experience: Turning Waste into Energy

In the European Union, Energy-from-Waste technologies have been an important part of waste management systems for decades.

According to CEWEP (Confederation of European Waste-to-Energy Plants):

  • more than 500 Waste-to-Energy plants operate across Europe

  • they process over 100 million tons of waste every year

  • they generate electricity and heat for around 20 million households

  • and provide district heating for over 15 million homes

In some countries, this technology has become a key part of the energy system:

  • in Denmark, up to 25% of district heating comes from waste-to-energy plants

  • in Sweden, more than 50% of household waste is converted into energy

  • Germany operates more than 90 waste-to-energy facilities

These examples demonstrate that modern waste management technologies can contribute not only to environmental protection but also to energy stability and infrastructure resilience.

A New Step for Ukraine

In Ukraine, such technologies are only beginning to develop.

UkrekoProm is taking a practical step in this direction by investing in modern equipment for thermal waste treatment.

The planned steam boiler installation will allow the company to:

  • safely process hazardous and industrial waste

  • generate thermal energy during the treatment process

  • create the technical foundation for future electricity generation

At the initial stage, electricity generation volumes will remain relatively small. However, the project represents an important step toward building a modern and sustainable waste management infrastructure in Ukraine.

Combining Environmental Responsibility and Energy Efficiency

Modern thermal waste treatment technologies significantly reduce waste volume while neutralizing hazardous substances.

At the same time, the energy produced during the process can be used to generate heat and electricity.

This approach makes it possible to:

  • reduce landfill pressure

  • safely treat hazardous waste

  • generate additional energy resources

In many European countries, this model has become a standard element of sustainable waste management systems.

Investing in the Future

Investments in modern infrastructure are not only about business development — they also contribute to building a more resilient energy and environmental system for the country.

Integrating waste treatment technologies with energy generation opens new opportunities for Ukraine as it continues to modernize its infrastructure and strengthen its energy independence.

UkrekoProm remains committed to implementing innovative solutions that combine environmental safety, technological development, and energy efficiency.
