Recycling Old Smartphones in Ukraine: Why It Matters for the Environment

24/01/2026

Every year on January 24, the world marks International Mobile Phone Recycling Day. This date highlights a growing environmental challenge: old smartphones are not just outdated devices — they are a source of hazardous waste and valuable resources at the same time.

The Hidden Environmental Impact of Smartphones

Smartphones contain rare and critical materials such as cobalt, tantalum, and tungsten. These resources are often extracted in regions with fragile ecosystems, including tropical forest areas. Mining activities contribute to deforestation, ecosystem destruction, and biodiversity loss.

Recycling old smartphones helps recover valuable materials and reduces the need for new mining, directly lowering environmental pressure on sensitive natural areas.

Why Mobile Phone Recycling Day Exists

The initiative began in 2015 as part of The Forest Is Calling campaign launched by the Jane Goodall Institute. Its goal was to show the connection between everyday electronics and the destruction of tropical forests. Since 2017, the initiative has been observed annually on January 24.

E-waste Is One of the Fastest-Growing Waste Streams

Electronic waste is among the fastest-growing waste categories worldwide. Mobile phones contain hazardous components that can contaminate soil and groundwater if disposed of improperly. At the same time, they include precious metals that can be safely recovered through proper recycling.

Smartphone Recycling in Ukraine

In Ukraine, responsible management of electronic waste is becoming increasingly important. Alongside professional recycling companies, civil and environmental initiatives play a key role in informing citizens about responsible disposal options.

One such initiative is Zero Waste Ukraine, which provides information on waste collection points and responsible recycling practices, including electronic waste:
